Cemetery Project 2016/17

The Town Council are hoping to Bring new life to Selby Cemetery and held 3 consultation events with the local community.

The Heritage Lottery Fund has awarded the Cemetery Project £9,000 for the first phase of the Cemetery Project - Mariners, Merchants and Monuments.  The funding will be used to provide re-enactments of peoples lives buried in the Cemetery, working with Selby High School, Selby Family History Group and the Town Council. The funding will also pay for tree trails throughout the cemetery. More information on the Cemetery Project Page.

It is hoped that through a larger grant from the Heritage Lottery the Cemetery Chapel will be renovated, to be used by local groups, schools and the college as a meeting room or classroom. There will be internet access available, refreshments and washroom facilities and hopefully the work will be completed before the end of 2017 or early 2018.

There will be a tree trail, nature walk and lots more exciting projects for the Cemetery. There will be a 'Friends of Selby Cemetery' Group to work with the team at the Cemetery. To be involved please contact Karen Mann, Town Clerk on 01757 708449.

The Town Council deals with the administration of Selby Cemetery on Westfield Road, Selby, including burial of remains and ashes, memorial safety, grounds maintenance. The Cemetery is well maintained and somewhere to have a peaceful walk on a nice warm day.  Benches are located throughout the Cemetery to sit and contemplate and watch the squirrels and birds enjoying the trees and flowers in the grounds.

The Cemetery has increased over the years and the grounds have specific areas, Ashes Section, Lawns Section and also various religion sections.

The war graves are predominantly in the older section of the Cemetery, near the large wall to the highway that leads through the Cemetery.  The war graves are white marble and every year a service takes place in the Cemetery with the Clergy and school children in attendance to commemorate those that lost their lives in the war.  This service is open to the public.  Wooden crosses are placed throughout the cemetery on the war graves after the service by the school children.

PLEASE NOTE IN BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS THERE MAY BE SEVERAL SUNKEN GRAVES IN THE CEMETERY.  PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN VISITING AND STAY WITHIN THE FOOTPATH AREAS WHEREVER POSSIBLE.
