Cemetery

The Town Council deals with the administration of Selby Cemetery on Westfield Road, Selby, including burial of remains and ashes, memorial safety, grounds maintenance. The Cemetery is well maintained and somewhere to have a peaceful walk on a nice warm day.  Benches are located throughout the Cemetery to sit and contemplate and watch the squirrels and birds enjoying the trees and flowers in the grounds.

The Cemetery has increased over the years and the grounds have specific areas, Ashes Section, Lawns Section and also various religion sections.

The war graves are predominantly in the older section of the Cemetery, near the large wall to the highway that leads through the Cemetery.  The war graves are white marble and every year a service takes place in the Cemetery with the Clergy and school children in attendance to commemorate those that lost their lives in the war.  This service is open to the public.  Wooden crosses are placed throughout the cemetery on the war graves after the service by the school children.

PLEASE NOTE IN BAD WEATHER CONDITIONS THERE MAY BE SEVERAL SUNKEN GRAVES IN THE CEMETERY.  PLEASE TAKE CARE WHEN VISITING AND STAY WITHIN THE FOOTPATH AREAS WHEREVER POSSIBLE.

If you are worried about paying for the costs of a funeral, there are organisations who may be able to help you.

Adult or Child Funerals

If you are in receipt of certain benefits you can apply directly to the DWP’s Funeral Expenses Payment This can help towards the cost of cremation fees, burial plots, death certificates and travel.

Child’s Funeral

If you are organising a child’s funeral, there is additional help available. The Children’s Funeral Fund covers Cremation Fees, the cost of a casket and burial fees. The application for this fund can be dealt with directly by your chosen funeral director and ourselves. Please speak to the team at the Town Hall for help with this.

The Child Funeral Charity can help with additional expenses not covered by the Children’s Funeral Fund, for example flowers, orders of ceremony and plaques.
