Selby Community Woodland

The Community Woodland, on Bondgate, Selby was officially opened in 2012.  The Big Lottery Fund – Groundwork Community Spaces gave funding for trees in the woodland.  Funding was also awarded from Tesco Bags of Help.

Beautiful sculptures and seating was installed and officially opened by school children and Trustees in July 2013.

The Gateway was officially opened in April 2016. The artist Chris Campbell worked alongside local school children before fabricating the gateway design. Eggborough Power Station donated the funds to make the gateway.

It is open to the public and there is a small car park for visitors to the woodland area only.

There is a separate, secure dog walking area with dog bins provided on site.

It is a fabulous facility with lots of types of trees and walks provided throughout the area.  The seating and sculptures can be seen as you walk through the woodland.

Come along and spend a lovely hour walking through the trail in the Woodland Area.

Selby Town Council resource staff cut and maintain the woodland area. As part of the Town Council’s Nature Recovery Action Plan, the perimeter areas will only be cut twice per year. The central grass areas, along with the area surrounding the Mining Wheel Memorial, are cut more regularly and seating and picnic benches are sited in these locations.

Mining Memorial Wheel

We installed a refabricated original miner’s wheel as a memorial to the Selby Coalfield in Spring 2023.  The area is fully accessible and includes seating to enable quiet reflection.

A memorial wall is currently being added to the area. Once completed, families and friends will be able to buy a “sleeve” to cover a brick, engraved with a short inscription. Details will be added here for anyone interested in purchasing a sleeve shortly.
