Selby Town Council is extremely grateful to Morrison’s supermarket for the donation of unsold daffodil bulbs which will be planted in town and continue to give pleasure for many years.

We contacted local supermarkets to see if there were any unsold bulbs or pots of bulbs and are delighted that Morrisons responded.  We hope to contact all the supermarkets next year to ensure that those bulbs which are unsold can still provide colour to our town.  This is all part of our ongoing commitment to provide floral displays and plant trees to improve not just the visual aspect of our town, but also contribute, in a small way, to improving our air quality.

Here is how you can join in and help.  The Town Council has organised a Bloom competition for many years and application forms are available now from the Town Hall offices or online at www.selbytowncouncil.gov.uk if you would like to enter your garden in the competition.  There are various classes you can enter:-

Best Kept Garden, Best Kept Secret Garden and Best Kept Commercial Premises

And those with an allotment can also enter.  Small prizes are available for the winners but it is mainly about people starting to enjoy gardening and take advantage of its calming effect.

Councillor Melanie Davis said:

The benefits of being out in your garden or allotment or just being among nature are well researched and reported.  We may live in a town but we can hopefully all try and grow something like cress on a flannel, herbs and flowers in a window box and cultivate our gardens and allotments with flowers and healthy vegetables to eat.  Whether we are 2 or 92 we can all benefit.  Research studies by the King’s Fund have found that gardening helps with reductions in depression and anxiety and improves social functioning.  It can also help maintain independence and prevent cognitive decline.  And there are also physical benefits – gardening for half an hour burns as many calories as some sports.

The Town Council plants bulbs every year somewhere in town and we also laid some wildflower turf in an area in the cemetery last year and are planning more.  The Town Council looks after the cemetery, Scott Road Community field  and the Bondgate Community Woodland, so get yourself out for a walk and enjoy your town while the sun is shining.  The Town Council is also responsible for three allotment sites and whilst some sites are oversubscribed there are vacancies on others.  And finally don’t forget to enter your garden in the Bloom Competition.  Closing date is Friday 7 July 2023
