Saturday 6 November sees the Town Bonfire and Firework Event.

The gates open at 6pm and the bonfire is lit at 6.30pm followed by the first set of fireworks at 7pm.

On Thursday 11 November, Remembrance Day, we will be holding a short service at the War Graves in Selby Cemetery. This special service was started by local war veteran Tommy Dixon many years ago. Mr Dixon spent time visiting local schools, interacting with the pupils and teaching them about Remembrance Day. Along with fellow local veterans and Selebians, Clergy from Churches Together and the Town Council, Mr Dixon invited pupils from local schools to join in with prayers, readings and hymns. Selby Town Council have continued with this special service following the sad passing of Mr Dixon.

The service will be held from 10.45am until approximately 11.05am, the children are invited to lay poppy crosses, first on the war graves and then on family graves throughout the cemetery. Everyone is welcome to attend.

This year’s Remembrance Service and parade will take place on Sunday 14 November. The parade, this year led by Selby Veterans, leaves Selby Community Centre on Scott Road at 9.20am, arriving at Selby Abbey shortly before the service starts at 10.00am. Following the service a wreath is laid at the RAF 51 Squadron Memorial in the Abbey grounds before the full wreath laying ceremony at the War Memorial in Selby Park. The parade reforms and a March Past in front of the Mayor of Selby, Cllr Michael Dyson, on the Market Place before marching back through the Town to the Community Centre. Due to the current restrictions around Covid 19,  this year we have to limit the numbers attending the Service in the Abbey.  The Service will be by invitation only, only one person representing their organisation, and the remainder of the seats will be available on a first come basis. Please contact the Town Hall on 01757 708449 for further information. Once again this year the Service will be live streamed to allow you to “take part” from home.

The Christmas Market and Light Switch-On Event is to be held on Saturday 27 November. The market will run from 10am to 5pm. Lots of live performances to keep you entertained throughout the day from Miss Marina Mae, the Rock Choir, local school choirs and more, up on the ‘stage’ very generously supplied free of charge once again by Campey’s of Selby Ltd. The Christmas Lights will be switched on by the Mayor of Selby, Cllr Michael Dyson, at 4pm.

YorkMix Radio will be in attendance with fun and games throughout the day and counting down to the Switch-On!

Watch out for Santa and of course the fabulous Dancing Turkeys!!

While we are really excited to be able to hold our fantastic events once again, we are very aware that life is not yet back to normal and we will continue to provide as many safety measures as we can. We want you to come along and enjoy all our events, have fun and not worry, and ask that you remain respectful of others.
