Remembrance Service - Selby Abbey 13 November 2016
The Remembrance Service at the Abbey with the Mayor and dignitaries in attendance took place on Sunday 13 November 2016 from 10am. The procession left the Community Centre, Scott Road, at 9.30am with the Guides and Scout Band leading the procession. The Abbey was full with local residents and veterans in attendance. As the two minutes silence took place poppy leaves fell from the ceiling in the Abbey across the altar which was extremely emotional.
The Deputy Lord Lieutenant, Rosalind Forbes Adams laid a wreath on behalf of the Queen as well as the Mayor and lots of local groups lat Selby Park, opposite the Abbey. Wreaths were then laid within the Abbey Grounds at the RAF 51 Squadron memorial.
The procession marched past the Mayor and dignitaries on the Market Place after the wreaths have been laid. Over 300 motorcycles, the 'Ride of Remembrance' joined the procession raising funds for the Royal British Legion.
