LOCAL DEMOCRACY WEEK - 14 - 19 OCTOBER 2013
Local Democracy Week is an annual national event which aims to raise young people's awareness of how local Councils operate, tell them about the opportunities available for taking part in decision-making at local level and, as a result, draw their attention to how them taking part in local affairs is crucial in maintaining local democracy.
Selby Town Council worked with the local schools during the local democracy week. A Mock Council meeting was held on Wednesday 16 October 2013 when students from local Junior Schools and Selby High School attended and took part in the meeting - taking on the role of Councillors, Officers and Planning Speakers for the meeting. Councillors Gatman (Mayor), Mrs Davies, Williams, Thurlow and Harding were in attendance and answered questions raised by the students after the Mock Council meeting.
The Mayor, Graham Gatman, Deputy Mayor, Rosie Corrigan, and other councillors visited schools during the week to take questions and explain their role as a Councillor to the students.Selby-20131016-00242.jpg; Selby-20131016-00247.jpg
